Writing isn't easy, that much is true, but there is always things that help you get started- or get continuing. Here is what I personally use when the words flow too slowly.
Let the music flow
For me, the most effective way to get started on a story, or just a scene, is play music. Preferably, it mirrors the theme or the mood within the story and puts you right into the headspace that is needed to get on with writing. For example, I'm working on a mystic story with witches, and for me, the music that fits best is the kind by artists like Hozier. Alternatively, I just use slow music for slow scenes and more peppy music for faster ones. Here are some examples of songs with moods that can be useful:
Heartbreak:
- Touch by Sleeping at Last
- Bad by James Bay
- If By Chance by Ruth B.
- Wasted by MKTO
- Youth by Daughter
Confidence
- Tonight Again by Guy Sebastian
- Can't Hold Us by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft. Ray Dalton)
- Confident by Demi Lovato
- Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa
- Fire N Gold by Bea Miller
Anger
- Fuck You by Lily Allen
- Centuries by Fall Out Boy
- Hot N Cold by Katy Perry
- So What by P!nk
- I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift
Falling in love
- Lost in You by khai dreams
- Heart Like Yours by Willamette Stone
- Sunflower by Rex Orange County
- Golden by Harry Styles
- Waking up Slow by Gabrielle Aplin
Fresh air helps
When the words just don't want to come to me, another thing that works 96% of the time is taking a break and going out. A walk to clear your head or finding a quiet spot to write outside really gets those writing-ideas going. And there's absolutely no reason as to not combine these two; grab a boombox or earphones, blast your favorite songs and write your heart out on some hill in the sun!
